When I was growing up, my family used to take long driving vacations. You know, you drive for several days, stay in hotels on the road going to (or coming from) your vacation spot. Of course when I was growing up we didnt have the Internet or GPS. We had to get maps and plan out our trip. If you were lucky, your father belonged to AAA and he would have them create a triptik (little books with a page and a fold-out map for each segment of your trip Google it). Half the fun in taking these trips was following the maps. Nothing like knowing how to get where youre going. Job search is much the same. You need a job search plan (your map) to help you find the right job without getting lost. Balancing your time during a job search can be challenging to say the least. Recruiters, job search engines, company career sites, your network, where do you start? The volume of information available, compounded by automated job search engines which email long lists of matching jobs (most of which are not even close) can keep you very busy on unproductive job search activities. Its so easy to spend all of your time reading the latest job search article or sorting through hundreds of potential jobs. The fear of missing that one important bit of information or missing that importantjob lead drives most of us crazy. They key, of course, is to have a plan and to stick to it. Your plan should outline how you will spend your time across all of your job search activities. At a loss as to how to start your plan? You will need: A Job Search Checklist Your job search checklist should include: Your Resume(s) Probably more than one depending on your experience. How to handle nightmare interviews -

How to handle nightmare interviews - Are you afraid of nightmare interviews? These come in all shapes and sizes. Maybe your interviewer grills you for hours and hours or expects you to sit through five or six  rounds of interviews  with team after team. Or maybe your interviewer doesn’t crack a smile or provide any nonverbal feedback the entire time. Some job seekers have gone to interviews only to be kept waiting for hours to meet the potential employer. A common (and perhaps not unfounded) fear among  job seekers  is the seemingly bizarre interview question that comes out of nowhere like an apparition. For example, what if the interviewer asked:  â€œWhat would you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse?” Instead of stiffening like a zombie and bemoaning all the “normal” interview questions you prepared to answer, think about the reason for the question. Ashley Morris, CEO of Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop explains why  interviewers may ask this question  and what they’re looking for when they ask it: “This question is great, because it tends to reveal a lot about the candidate without them even knowing what they are revealing. Based on their response, we can infer whether  they  perform well under pressure and think quickly on their feet, whether they are a planner, what their priorities are and, most importantly, whether or not they had fun with the question. The last point is invaluable. The way they respond, not necessarily their verbatim response, is what indicates a fit (or not) with our own company culture  â€"  something we  value  highly. Get my free white paper:  5 Mistakes Preventing You From Landing a Job This Week   Norwegian Cruise Line is known to ask those applying for  marketing coordinator positions:  â€œDo you believe in Bigfoot?” And what if the interviewer asked you: “Would you rather fight one  giant monster or 100 small monsters?” Consider CEO of Konnect Public Relations,  Sabina Gault’s, reasoning behind this scary question: “We use this question to gauge how candidates tackle obstacles and tasks. If they say they would rather fight one giant monster, we figure they are better suited to take on bigger  projects. If they choose 100 small monsters, this usually means the candidate is good at multitasking and taking on many tasks at the same time. More than anything, we really are looking to see if the candidate has the ability to think outside of the box and on their toes. There really isn’t a right or wrong answer; we are really looking more at the candidate’s reaction to the question.” Keep these key facts in mind when  formulating  answers to  interview questions  that seem off the wall. Interviewers want to know: Are you comfortable asking questions, and can you think critically?  Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification regarding the question. For example,  Joe DeProspero,  vice president of finance at  Dave Buster’s,  explains that the company values a candidate who understands how to probe critically and get at the root of the specifics of such a question. He notes how these questions help the company, “see if someone can think critically, whether they are comfortable enough to ask probing questions and if they can think on their feet. During the hiring process, I am looking for candidates who ask important follow-up questions to my question, such as ‘Why would you want to know this?” DeProspero also explains: “Often times, in finance, what someone asks for is not necessarily what they need. by asking questions, we can help them to better understand if we recognize the underlying issue. Above all, I look for a candidate’s eagerness to answer the question, as this is the way they will approach every task given to them on the job.” If you need to reply to a  brain teaser:  Its OK to stop and think before you answer. Its also fine  to ask for clarification if there are any details you dont understand.  The interviewer is trying to learn how you would act as an employee. Try to answer the question in a way that showcases the skills you have for the job.  If the position is mathematical,  use math skills. If demonstrating your creative side is more important, go that route. When you’re prepared and know what to expect, your interview doesn’t have to be as scary as a scene from The Shining. 3 Ways To Instantly Improve Your Online Personal Brand - Work It Daily

3 Ways To Instantly Improve Your Online Personal Brand - Work It Daily It’s the start of a new year and you have probably set some new career goals for yourself. Whether you’re looking for a new job, working to move up within your organization, or starting your own business, building a strong personal brand will help you get the best possible results. Webinar: The Science Of Personal Websites For Career Advancement Your personal brand encompasses a number of things, from wardrobe to resume to LinkedIn profile, but your web presence is easily the most visible piece and needs the most care. Thankfully, it’s also one of the easiest aspects of your brand to improve. Here are three ways that will help you improve your online personal brand: 1. Get A Professional Headshot Social networking accounts have become, in many ways, your extended resume. Many employers now ask for your LinkedIn profile along with your resume (and oftentimes they’ll find it without telling you they’re looking). LinkedIn and Facebook also power many other applications, oftentimes taking your profile picture with the rest of your data. The result? For better or worse, your face is everywhere. Most people have pictures that check the minimum acceptability boxes: the subject of the photo is identifiably human and not visibly involved in illegal activities (at least at the time of the photo). This approach won’t prevent a person from getting an interview, but it represents a missed opportunity to impress. By getting your own professional headshot, you are making a statement that you care about your appearance (and your career, by extension) and sending a message that you have a standard of quality and professionalism that you uphold in everything you do. This can be the determining factor that helps you rise to the top of the resume pile or get called back for the second-round interview. Here are some photo specifics: Avoid the local family portrait studio -- find a photographer who specializes in executive headshots. Check out photographers’ portfolios online before you schedule an appointment. Make sure your photo is tasteful and flattering (your eyes are fully open, your facial expression conveys confidence and sociability). Have at least one photo taken on a solid white or gray background. Anything lighter than solid black will work. Outdoor shots and cityscapes can work well, but make sure to have at least one great studio shot, as well. Make sure your photographer can touch up your photos without them being obviously edited. Crop your headshot photo just below the shoulders and just above, or below, the top of your head. 2. Spruce Up Your E-mail Signature According to a study by the Radicati Group we send, on average, 40 business e-mails each day. That represents 40 opportunities to stand out to potential employers, clients, or partners. The best signatures give the e-mail recipient your name, company, title, and contact information, which can be looked up for quick reference in the future. It’s both a courtesy to the people with whom you communicate and a badge of professionalism that shows that you know your way around the business world. Many signatures could go even further to serve your goals, however, and here are some tips to make the most of your communication: Insert a call-to-action for the recipient. If you are looking for a job in sales, you might write “Looking to join a company and immediately impact the top-line”. If you’re a self-employed CPA, you might say “Helping people make tax season stress-free since 1990.” You never know who might be in a position to hire you or help you, or who might see that note and remember a friend of theirs could use your skills. Provide links to your personal website, blog, and/or relevant social media profiles. People you interact with will often look for more information about you and this makes it easy for you to direct them to the resources that present you in the best light. 3. Create A Personal Website According to research we’ve done at Workfolio, 56% of HR professionals think a personal website is the most impressive self-promotion tool a job applicant can have. This is also the tool that few people in non-technical roles currently have. A website allows you to create a space that’s 100% yours, not “renting” space from a social network, where you have control over the content and appearance. Use this space to tell the story of your career, showcase your accomplishments, and build a community around your writing. Here are tips for getting started with a personal website: If you are not technically inclined, explore website builder tools that take care of the coding for you. Spend time on writing good content, not setting your website up. Tell a story around the items on resume as a starting point and build out content from there. You should explain who you are, what you’ve done, and where you want to go, at the minimum. Some tools also offer the ability to import content from social media profiles to make this even easier. You can also use this space to get a bit more personal than you can on your resume -- talk about your hobbies and interests, as long as they’re not inappropriate for work or potentially off-putting. Make a point to visually highlight your major career achievements and quantifiable results. You can do this through larger font sizes or unique visual features. Get a custom domain that is as close to your name as possible. This helps people find you when they are searching for you using search engines. Place links to your website on social media and in your e-mail signature. Watch This Webinar! Heres What Two Companies Are Doing To Move The Dial On Gender Equity

Heres What Two Companies Are Doing To Move The Dial On Gender Equity Yure eager to lead. You want to work on a team and for a company that values gender diversity and inclusion. Yet we all see that progression is slow. Dont lose heart. There are companies doing great work and leaders who have a real commitment to creating workplaces where women thrive.I had the opportunity to talk with Beatrice Opoku-Asare, Global Director, Inclusion and Diversity at Newmont Mining and Melina Param, SVP, Human Resurces, Wine Spirits Division at Constellation Brands about what their companies are doing create gender equity and inclusion. Both women were optimistic about the future and had tangible strategies to share.Women Help Men Become AlliesWhen I asked Opoku-Asare what her number one piece of advice was for women, she said, Ive come to understand and see the power of the male ally just based on conversations with my husband and other allies. If women can engage men in a dialogue and help them to better understand what our experience as a woman is like, once they get it, they become our allies. She went on, When someone doesnt look, think or sound like a group but can speak about the groups unique experience and mission from a passionate place, they become a naturally credible advocate - they are heard, especially by other allies. The mora men we can engage in conversations like that the bigger the impact. We need more male allies, aka men who get it.She also talked about an angle for opening the door for turning men into allies that has a strong impact. Everyone has had the experience of belonging to a majority or minority group in one or more aspects of our lives field of study, parenting, leadership, department, and of course gender. Once we can tap into that experience of knowing how that feels, we are better positioned to progress conversations with our male allies. We can better connect with their experience and help them connect to ours.Opoku-Asare believes that every man is an ally in the making. Referring to men who are not yet speaking up for gender inclusion, she said, They just dont know that they are our allies yetLeaders Create Connection PointsI appreciated Opoku-Asares straightforward advice for leaders. A lack of connection can create the biggest problem, she said. You lose the pulse of whats happening, especially with minorities and others who are not in your everyday circle of life. She added, Leaders can create ongoing connection points to build empathy and an understanding of different experiences of their teams and the broader workforce. Take someone to lunch, grab a cup of coffee, do a walk and talk. We forget that its the simple things that can sometimes have the greatest impact.Organizations Programming and Network BuildingMelina Param shared several of the broad-based programs that Constellation Brands has invested in to drive results. Were committed to fostering a workforce that reflects our consumers and the areas where we l ive and work. Weve invested in providing leadership and growth opportunities for our women employees. One of those programs, an internal Womens Leadership Network, crosses all Divisions at Constellation Brands. Param says the network has two main objectives to build a strong network with exposure to senior leaders and other successful women from across the organization and to gain leadership development with content taught through the lens of unique challenges that women may face. What kinds of results have they noticed? The program has helped build awareness about the benefits associated with gender diversity at the senior leadership level and has led to us providing unconscious bias training for our leaders and our recruiting team. Param said. The upshot is that the program has had a positive ripple effect across the company.Take the Long ViewAs we wound up our conversation, Opoku-Asare said, I believe in the little big things those things that require a small effort but have a gino rmous impact, as my 4-year-old daughter would say. You have to take small steps, take your time and do life big.She added, Its a lot of change management and testing of ideas and concepts in different parts of the organization. Provide opportunities for building awareness, simple tools, help them take action, experience the journey and share their stories. Then take another step.Everyone wishes there was a silver bullet for creating gender equity and inclusion, but we all know that its not that simple. Take a page from the playbooks of Newmont Mining and Constellation Brands, and remain as optimistic as Param and Opoku-Asare and progress will follow.--Mo is the Founder of The Moxie Exchange, a training and peer mentoring organization for companies who want to recruit, develop, promote and retain women and create inclusive workplaces.
